Preserving the Past: The Magic of Growing Heirloom Varieties

Hello Beautiful Friends!

In our garden, we only grow organic, non-GMO heirloom varieties. If you’ve ever stepped into a garden like this, you can hear it buzzing with life, it just feels different.

Welcome to Oceans Bliss Portal! I’m deeply passionate about preserving history and seeds are some of the most powerful gatekeepers of our past. Seeds carry the story of human survival, culture, and tradition.

Heirloom and open-pollinated varieties are passed down through generations, often remaining genetically stable, preserving rich flavour, resilience, and biodiversity. Unlike many modern hybrids, these seeds can be saved and replanted year after year, naturally adapting to local soil and climate over time.

Here’s a short list of some heirlooms we grow yearly and love eating everyday:

  • Brandywine tomatoes
  • Purple and white cauliflower
  • Yellow pear tomatoes
  • Purple beans
  • Rainbow carrots—Atomic Red, Cosmic Purple, Lunar White
  • Champion of England peas
  • Purple Peruvian potatoes
  • Red orach with deep crimson leaves

One wild year, our tomatoes went absolutely crazy, my daughter held up a four-pounder which we sliced for salad with mozzarella and basil. Moments like that make the work worthwhile.

Preserving heirloom varieties is vital. We’ve lost 75% of crop diversity in the last century, and each seed we save is a piece of living history. Growing heirlooms isn’t just gardening, it’s stewardship.

Look for heirloom seeds at your local garden centre, seed library, or nursery or ask your farmers’ market vendors if they sell or share seeds.
