Hello Beautiful Friends!

I love potatoes. Mashed, fried, or baked, they always impress me. But nothing could prepare me for the potato revelation that awaited me in Peru. Nestled in the heart of the Andes, this culturally rich land turned out to be the mother ship of heirloom potato varieties.

Welcome back to Oceans Bliss Portal! Let’s go to Peru, an amazing place filled with potatoes that ignited my passion for heirloom varieties!

As I embarked on my Peruvian adventure, I discovered that the cuisine of potatoes come in an astonishing array of varieties. While I always thought that potatoes were just…well, potatoes, Peru taught me otherwise! Here, you’ll find colourful heirloom potatoes that date back centuries and boast flavours as diverse as their unique appearances.

From the deep purples to the vibrant reds, each potato variety tells a story of tradition and cultural heritage. Peru’s unique
geography plays a vital role in nurturing these precious tubers. The Andes’ rich, nutrient-dense soil, coupled with the absence of harmful chemicals, allows these potatoes to flourish in their natural environment, embodying the essence of sustainable agriculture.

Peru’s traditional culture and reverence for heirloom varieties are intrinsically linked. As I roamed the bustling markets and dined at local cafes, I realized that the people here have a deep appreciation for their culinary heritage. The practice of growing and preserving heirloom potatoes is not just a means of sustenance but a way of preserving their rich cultural past.

Peruvian cuisine prides itself on its authenticity, creativity and using ingredients sourced from the land around them. I had potatoes in dishes I never thought possible. One of my favourites was a veggie and rice dish, elevated to new heights by the addition of crispy, purple potatoes. I left that restaurant, wanting to grow my own purple potatoes back home and
create my own delicious potato dishes!

My visit to Peru changed me forever, it is definitely a Bliss Hotspot, which I’ll talk about in another post!  When I returned home, I knew I had to bring a slice of that magic back with me. Sourcing heirloom purple potato seedlings, I grew them in my garden, the spirit of Peru in my own backyard!

Now, just as a side note, Oceans Bliss Portal isn’t about recipes or cooking techniques. But, the simplicity of flavours I encountered in Peru became an enlightening cooking lesson for me.  I decided to create my own Peruvian-inspired potato feast. I tossed those heirloom purple potatoes with fresh lemon, olive oil, basil and garlic cloves, baking them to perfection in the oven.

My potato discovery in Peru was an unforgettable journey into the heart of authentic and culturally rich cuisine. The reverence for tradition, heirloom varieties, and sustainable farming practices taught me valuable lessons and inspired me to bring that essence home. These potatoes are not just a vegetable; they are living bliss treasures, connecting us to a world of culinary heritage and the lands where our food originates.

So, next time you’re enjoying a yummy potato dish, take a moment to appreciate the humble spud’s incredible journey and farmers that strive to keep blissfulicious – food, the culture and heritage alive. And if you ever find yourself in Peru, be sure to indulge in all of the yummy potatoes!
