Hello Beautiful Friends!

If you’re anything like me, seed-starting season begins with excitement… and ends with every sunny windowsill completely taken over.
Welcome back to Oceans Bliss Portal! Let’s get creative with our space for some extra seedlings this year! So, before you start rearranging furniture to chase the sun, here’s a simple, budget-friendly solution:

Repurpose transparent storage boxes or drawers into mini greenhouses.
No fancy setup. No big investment. Just practical, seasonal living.

Why Storage Boxes Work So Well

Transparent storage boxes are basically ready-made mini greenhouses.
Here’s why they’re perfect for small spaces:

  • They allow light in – Clear plastic lets sunlight reach your seedlings.
  • They insulate from the cold – Thick plastic protects tender plants from chilly spring air.
  • They shield from wind – Especially helpful in exposed yards.
  • They hold a lot – You can fit loads of seedlings and trays inside.
  • They’re inexpensive & easy to find – Repurpose old drawers or buy affordable bins.

It’s a simple way to extend your growing space without adding more indoor clutter.

What You’ll Need

Keep it simple. Here’s your basic list:

  • Transparent storage boxes or storage drawers
  • Seed trays or small pots with seedlings
  • Popsicle sticks (for labeling)
  • Cute signs or labels for each box
  • Optional: printed pictures of the vegetable growing inside

Make It Fun & Organized

This is where you can add personality.

  • Tape a picture of the vegetable (carrot, tomato, lettuce, etc.) on the outside of each box.
  • Use popsicle sticks as plant markers inside the trays.
  • Let kids draw the veggie on the label for a seasonal homeschool activity.
  • Add a small “Carrot House” or “Tomato Nursery” sign to each bin.

It keeps everything organized and honestly, it makes seed starting feel even more magical.

Two Easy Setup Methods

1️⃣ Seedlings Inside the Box (Lid On Top)

Place your seedlings inside the storage box and put the lid on top.
Best for:

  • Cooler days
  • Early spring
  • Extra insulation overnight

This creates a cozy protected environment.

2️⃣ Seedlings on the Lid (Box Over Top)

Place your seedlings on the lid and flip the box over them.
Why this works beautifully:

  • Better airflow and ventilation
  • Less trapped moisture
  • Helps prevent fungal diseases like damping off

On warmer days, you can prop the box slightly open for even more ventilation.

Preventing Damping Off

Damping off is a fungal disease that causes seedlings to suddenly collapse at the soil line.
To reduce the risk:

  • Allow airflow (prop open on warmer days)
  • Avoid overwatering
  • Wipe excess condensation
  • Don’t overcrowd seedlings

The box-over-lid method especially helps improve ventilation and reduce humidity buildup.

Important Tip for Windy Sites

If you live somewhere windy, don’t forget to:
Place a rock, brick or small weight on top of the box.

Perfect for Small Spaces

This method is ideal if you:

  • Don’t have enough sunny windowsills
  • Have limited indoor space
  • Garden on a patio or small deck
  • Want an inexpensive mini greenhouse solution

Sometimes the best garden hacks aren’t complicated they’re just clever uses of what we already have.
